In St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Paul encourages us to learn to see with the “eyes of your heart.” He was referring to what happens when, after baptizing those who have given themselves to God, they gain the ability to see the actions and motives of God through their hearts. This is a natural progression of living a life with God, in the Holy Spirit. At first, you come to see the possibility for God with you intellect. Using your ability to reason, one can come to accept the possibility for the existence of God but need to enact their will to enter the “leap of faith.”
Many of us attempt to require God to give full disclosure before they trust and obey but God need only say it once. We would not accept the same behavior from our children, and yet we try to demand it from God. The truth is that we are simply more afraid of being hurt than we are motivated to find the love of God. We have heard it many times before. God is love and if that really is true, what are we afraid of?
This lack of trust in God is more a reflection of our relationship with him. If we have no trust in God, we have little to no relationship with Him. The only way trust grows in a relationship is through on-going development in love.
Let’s take a minute to examine how we function and what we struggle to understand about our decision-making process. We have the ability to reason and choose to do as we wish. We are beings that are made of flesh and able to occupy time and space. Our flesh is meant to be governed by our will and reason (Minds). Our minds are motivated by our hearts or soul. The question then turns to what motivates our hearts? The two biggest options are LOVE and FEAR.
When we look at these two options, we see their historical role in the life of Humanity. Love was present with Adam and Eve and God before the fall. Fear resulted after the fall and continues on today. John Paul II defined sin as the rejection of Love. When we step back from this question, we can’t help but see how our struggle continues today.
Fear is not of God and is one of the devil’s favorite tools to keep us from finding God’s love. Lucifer knows that if we truly encounter God and His love, we will be lost to him forever. Why? When you have found your heart’s desire, you will stop searching other places and stay with the true source of love – God! Can you see God with the eyes of your heart? You can learn to move through the fear and jump into God’s loving heart. You will never regret it.
