How does one see what the invisible God is doing? How do we see evidence of the Holy Spirit moving in our lives, in our church, in our world? Jesus tells Nicodemus in John chapter three that in being born from above, one can see the Kingdom of God. Being born of the Holy Spirit connects us to God through our spirits and provides a conduit of communication. Without this connection, we lack the knowledge and power to live in God’s Kingdom on Earth. Let us consider three distinct calls that the Holy Spirit desires to lead us into.
- Grow In Authentic Faith – The Covid Pandemic revealed just how shallow our faith in God really was. When the world was gripped by a spirit of fear, the Church reacted very much the same way. Perhaps the Holy Spirit used this to peel away the false plastic veneer of our fake Christianity and left us exposed to the truth that we don’t have the faith in Christ we thought we did. He is calling us into deeper faith!
- Grow Deeper In My Love – Many in the church have lost the “Fear of The Lord” and replaced it with the “Fear of Man.” We are more afraid of what others think of us than God. Thus, we are not willing to sacrifice our reputations, livelihood, nor our lives. If we truly draw closer to Christ, we will draw closer to sacrifice and suffering. He is calling us into deeper Love.
- Live More In My Spirit – As a Church, we have moved the Holy Spirit to the periphery of parish life. How often do we hear the Holy Spirit preached about from the pulpit? Are we getting catechesis on what to do with the Third Person of the Trinity? If the early Church understood real conversion to include the manifestations of the spirit’s presence (Acts 8:16), then we should do the same. He is calling us into deeper life in His Spirit!
Oh, Lord, give us the courage to respond to your call.
Beautiful Amen
Oh, that God’s people would live in docility to the Spirit!
Oh, that bishops and priests would preach and teach more on the Spirit from the pulpit and anywhere else they preach and teach!
Thank you, Deacon Ralph, for living it and encouraging others to be open to the Spirit and follow his promptings.
